FSS Celebrates 12 First Class, 20 PhDs among 727 graduands at OAU 44th Convocation Ceremonies

A total of 727 former students of the Faculty of Social Sciences are among 7,209 graduands that the Obafemi Awolowo University is celebrating in the 44th Convocation Ceremonies this week. A break down of the figures shows a total of 624 graduands from the Faculty of Social Sciences at the undergraduate level and 103 at the postgraduate level.

Candidate Nwayor Isioma Jessica of the Department of Geography leads all B.Sc. graduands, winning the Faculty prize as the overall best graduating student. In addition to Nwayor who also won the award as best student in Geography, other winners of departmental awards as best graduating students are Onakalu Praise Oreoluwa (Demography and Social Statistics), Azeez Mariam Omolara (Economics), Ibrahim Ayinde Rahmon (Political Science) and Ajani Bukunmi Kehinde (Sociology and Anthropology).

Alongside Nwayor, the 12 students who graduated with First Class from the various departments of the Faculty are made up of 3 from Demography and Social Statistics, 5 from Economics, 1 from Psychology and 2 from Sociology and Anthropology. In all, 185 students graduated in the second-class upper division category, 339 in the second-class lower category, 82 in the third-class category and 6 with pass. The Department of Psychology produced the highest number of graduands (136), followed by Economics (128), Political Science (127), Sociology and Anthropology (88), Demography and Social Statistics (76) and Geography (69).

At the Postgraduate level, the 103 graduands are made up of 15 in the professional degrees category, 61 in the M.Sc, 7 in the MPhil and 20 in the PhD categories. The Department of Economics (34) led the pack with 22 M.Sc., 4 MPhil and 8 doctoral degree graduands. Demography and Social Statistics (21), Psychology (14), Sociology and Anthropology (13), Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies (10), Geography (06) and Political Science (05) also produced postgraduate degree graduands at different levels.

Among the doctoral degree graduands are Faculty members: Drs John Olugbenga Abe, Olufemi Mayowa Adetutu and Funmilola Folasade Oyinlola (Demography and Social Statistics) Tolulope Temilola Osinubi (Economics) and Kolawole Taofeek Aliyu (Sociology and Anthropology).
